The Future of Online Communities: Micropayments in the Metaverse

The future of online communities will rely on micro-payments for the meta-verse.

After watching the rise and fall of crypto, ICOs, IDOs, DEXs, and now even NFTs over the last decade, it is my hunch that the next real change is going to come from simply: digital cash and micropayments.

Going back to our (digital) roots.

The metaverse is certainly here to stay, thanks to the cash injection from Facebook (Meta), but the only way I see it thriving on any blockchain is if it scales on-chain using micropayments.

Not even the most popular blockchains (e.g. BTC, ETH, SOL) can do this using Proof-of-Work, at the time of this writing.

Without micropayments, we have not yet seen anything truly innovative.

All we have seen is the growth of a massive casino environment, increased speculation, and very few use cases and business models making use of what’s truly different: the ability to handle payments less than a cent.

So it is with this knowledge that I say that the future of communities in Web3 and the metaverse (what I call “meta-communities”) depends on the enablement of micropayments.

From meta to micro. As above, so below.
